A gift from a corporation, foundation or individual to a community school that combines history and environmental education.
American Forests Living Classrooms are more than just tree-planting projects for schools. Young minds grow with learning and experience.
Trees grow with water and sunshine. Put both together and you have an American Forests Living Classrooms, a unique way to teach children lessons
in history, environmental education, science, geography, mathematics and arts.
Included in each Living Classroom:
- 20 Historic Trees and planting kits
- CITYgreen Software
- Downloadable lesson plans for teachers
- 30 National Registry of Big Trees Calendars
- America's Historic Trees Book
- Customized Granite Marker
Historic Trees - Teachers may select up to four historic tree species and will receive a selection of twenty from those species chosen.
Each tree is a direct-offspring of a historic parent tree enhancing curriculum studies. Each Historic Tree comes in a complete outdoor
planting kit that contains:
- A one to three-foot tall historic tree in a four-inch pot
- A 48" greenhouse tube to protect the tree and enhance growth
- A treated pine stake to support the tube
- A bird safety net for the top of the tube
- One fertilizer tablet
- Step-by-step planting instructions
- Certificate of authentication (one per Living Classrooms)
- Fiberglass outdoor ground markers showing each tree's original history
CITYgreen software is also included with every Living Classroom. CITYgreen is a Windows™ based Geographic Information System (GIS). It is an extension to ArcView 3.x, which was developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). ESRI's products have become the most widely used GIS software in the country. Many teachers are using CITYgreen to teach the disciplines of math, science and geography to their students. Since the programs are real world and take place where the students live, the student involvement and interest is of an all-time high. The students learn valuable lessons about the role that trees play in the environment by cleaning the air we breathe and filtering our water supply. CITYgreen and ArcView are included as a ready-to-use package. This package represents a $2,100 value on the commercial market.
